① After connecting power to the illuminant device, turn on the light and adjust to an appropriate intensity.
② Place the mineral sample to be observed on the condensing hole in the center of the rotary stage.
Fix the sample with two fixing clips.
③ Adjust the object lens to low magnification, and focus using the main/precision handles.
④ Change the object lens from low magnification to high magnification, and observe.

- Dark-side observation
Usually, the polarizer and analyzer are placed so that the polarizing surface will have a 90˚ angle.
When there is no sample on the stage, the straight polarized light which goes through
the polarizer cannot go through the analyzer, making the view dark.
- ORTHOSCOPE observation
An observation method that doesn’t use a condenser and Bertrand lens
: There are crossed nicols method and parallel nicols [frog nicols] method.
* Crossed nicols method: The interference figure of the sample is observed while the polarizer
and analyzer are crossed (90˚). The absorptiveness of light, refractive index etc are determined.
To observe interference color with difference, λ,λ/4 plate should be used.
* Parallel nicols method: Just like with ordinary microscopes, observation is made while the polarizer
and analyzer are crossed parallel (0˚). The overall form of the sample, the color of the sample,
the state of coexisting with other minerals, etc are observed.
- CONOSCOPE observation
By enlarging the opening through the conoscope condenser, observation is made on the interference figure
when incident lights of each direction are illuminated on the location of the sample.
The object lens is used during conoscope observation, which makes the real image small.
Therefore, it is usually enlarged by combining the object lens and ocular.
* Rechargeable models shall be connected to an adaptor and charged for more than three hours.
Then, they shall be used without the adaptor.
