Zirconium is not almost melted in acid and alkali, and has excellent anticorrosion-ability in water of high temperature and no reaction even in melted alkali. While it is stable at the state of lump, it is easily ignited in the air at the state of fine powders, reacts directly to non-metallic components such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, silicon, sulfur and halogen. It has the smallest neutron absorption cross section, so it can be used throughout nuclear power industries.
Zirconium gets ignited easily and burned fast in white heat.
These characteristics make it used for bullets, explosives, airbag, pre-tensioner of seat belts, ignition paste of photographic flash cubes, getter, binder and brazing material for abrasive wheel, polishing disk, hydrogen source material of metal foaming. The range of its applications is being widened.
