* What is a Water Hammer?
Water hammer refers to transient conditions in which flow and pressure change sharply, when opening or closing any valve quickly or changing in pump speed pump trip change in flow demand and change in reservoir head in pipeline with normal flow, that is, in the pipeline system with a constant flow and pressure at a certain point. Due to the spread of pressure wave by rapid change of flow in the pipeline, pressure in the pipeline falls to less than the saturation vapor pressure of water. Depending on the shape of the pipeline, this generates vapors and in turn possibly results in collapse or damage of the pipeline due to shock wave in the course of column separation and return. In addition, abnormal low pressure may cause health risks that exists outside.
* Damages of Water hammer
- Raised pressure in the pipeline causes break downs of facilities such as pumps, valves, pipes,
and supporting structures.
- Vapor cavities causes collapses or heavy shock waves generated in the course of column
separation and subsequent return causesbreak of the pipeline.
- Low pressure in water supply pipeline causes health risks by letting in pollutants from outside.
- Water hammer may cause vibrations and noise or may make automatic controlling hard due to
abnormal pressure wave.
