[Characteristics]
OM5 is the designation given to a new type of fiber optic glass intended for use with Short Wave Division Multiplexing (SWDM).
Currently the wavelength of 850nm is utilized by Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELS) to send light down a pair of fiber optic strands for applications such as gigabit Ethernet and 10 gigabit Ethernet.
In addition to 850nm, SWDM(OM5) would use 880nm, 910nm and 940nm, so spacing out the four different wavelengths will permit the transceiver to increase its capacity by at least a factor of four, that is, fourfold data-rate increase.
SWDM(OM5) will enable 40G and 100G over fewer fiber strands than previous methods of transmitting light.
