Generally, LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device) is used as asound generator which is used for military and police purposes. For commercial purpose, it's designed for traffic control. This new acoustic device for traffic is called DLRAD(Directional Long Range Acoustic Device) which was developed the sound directivity by marrowing the angle of sound wave & radiation.
Why was "DLRAD" required for
It is issued so that there is not a few second collision accidents on highways.
This secondary accident is because the approaching vehicles at 100km/h could not recognize the forward point of car accident and warnings about the construction site. Normal control ways are warning light, directional board and horn speaker to warn approaching vehicles.
However, it's a reality that it is difficult to completely prevent the secondary accident by those methods. In particular, the drivers inside the approaching vehicles used to recognize the warning from the horn speaker within 10 ~ 20 m.
In the case of recognizing of distance(10 ~ 20m), it's too late for the driver with 100km/h to change their direction of the driving vehicle to avoid secondary accident on highway.
Conventional Horn Speaker
So, Korea Expressway Corp. required for a special acoustic device to secure safety of road in the site of construction and accident on road. They fixed and asked the performance of the acoustic device to produce the best effect at the worst conditions. This is the reason why DLRAD had been developed.
