Karayoung BI was inspired by the magpie-tailed incense burner of Goguryeo. It is the first incense burner (handled incense burner) used in Korea, and it is presumed to be the only real incense burner that survives. But now, this incense burner is a treasure dedicated to Horyu-ji (temple in Nara region, Japan), not Korea. It is housed in the Tokyo National Museum. ​ The reason that this incense burner belongs to Goguryeo is because of the inscription ‘慧慈’ engraved on the back of the handle. 慧慈 (Hyeja) was a monk from Goguryeo who went to Japan in 595 and returned to Korea in 615. While staying for 20 years, he became a teacher to the then Japanese king, Prince Shotoku (Sungdeok), and contributed to the development of Japanese Buddhist culture. Not only did he play an important role, but he was also a person who greatly influenced Japanese politics and culture.
